Planting vegetables in containers is a versatile way of growing edible crops where space is limited. The key things to remember when growing vegetables are firstly to grow what you enjoy eating and secondly ensure the containers are located in the correct growing conditions for the vegetables to thrive.
To make the most of the space and the full growing season consider successive planting. Listed below are some veggies that are great to grow together: Beetroot is easy to sow in March. The young leaves can be used as ‘spinach’ and after harvesting can be followed with fast growing late Summer Salads. Carrots benefit from growing in light compost conditions that are sown from February for June harvesting. Dwarf French Beans can then be sown after the carrot for harvesting in September.
Lettuces can be sown from January (with protection) for June harvesting. Follow the lettuces with Leeks for a winter harvest. Potatoes are easy to grow in containers but do require space and depth. Once the Potatoes have been harvested then a quick crop of Radishes can be sown for a late harvest. Spinach can be sown as early as February as it runs to seed quickly when the weather warms up. Once this happen you can pot up Tomatoes that are pretty low maintenance to grow in pots. Ensure the pots are located in a sunny, sheltered location outdoors in late spring. Bush varieties don’t require any support but others may need a garden cane for support.
Growing vegetables in containers are generally quite easy, however there is the risk of the containers drying out and a lack of root space may result in wilting and nutrient deficiency. To address these issues, ensure the container is as large as you have space for and mix in some Soil Improver before planting. Once the veggies are established give them a boost of diluted Beanstalk fruit and Veg Feed every 2 weeks to keep the nutrient contents up.
