How to make your lawn wildlife-friendly

Lawns have traditionally been strictly managed but all that effort deprives both us and wildlife of the joys of a wilder lawn. It’s time to rethink your lawn.

A lawn full of wildflowers provides vital food for bees and butterflies, amongst many other benefits so embrace daisies and dandelions as a wildflower instead of a weed. Another option is to mix up your lawn into different areas. Have some areas shorts as a pathway and an easy foraging space for worm-eating birds. Approximately 75% of all wild bee species ie, solitary bees’ nest in bare soil and short grass. Then allow the rest to grow a little longer, offering shelter to caterpillars, grasshoppers and other insects. In turn, this multitude of minibeasts will create a buffet for birds and bats. Frogs and newts can also be found sheltering in longer grass. Longer grass has deeper roots, which makes it more resilient to dry spells and provides places for wildlife to escape the heat, too.

Planting some of your spring bulbs direct into your lawn can give early pollinators a vital food source. Remember not to mow the area until the flowers have fully died back so they will grow back strong and healthy next year.

Lawns don’t have to be predominantly grass, you could also try chamomile, clover or creeping thyme. These won’t be suitable to grow where there is a lot of foot traffic but pollinators will regularly visit.

Another consideration for your lawn is that rainwater is slowly filtered through the grass and down into the soil, rather than running off as floodwater. By allowing your grass to grow a little longer, and allowing a mix of plants to flourish will enable a lawn to soak up even more water.

Top Tip

Feed your lawn with a lawn feed, such as Green and apply using a watering can with a rose. Then cut and leave the clippings as a mulch to give your lawn a boost at the start of the growing season.
