What to do in your garden in February

Plant bare-root roses

As long as the ground isn’t frozen, now is the time to plant bare-root roses. Roses can be expensive plants, but they last for many years and are cheaper when bought as bare-root.

Dig a hole roughly twice the width of the plant’s roots and the depth of a spade’s blade. Place the rose in the centre of the hole and ensure the graft union – that’s where the cultivar joins the rootstock and the point from which the branches originate, is at soil level. Back-fill gently with the excavated soil.

Top Tip

Mix Boost soil improver in the hole to help the roses get a good start. Sprinkle some on the soil surface.

Feed fruit trees and bushes

Spring is the best time for fertilizing fruit trees. It’s when they need plenty of energy to push out new leaves and nurture baby fruits.

Top Tip

Feeding fruit trees promotes healthy growth. It gives the plant the nutrients it needs to produce the best possible crop. Mulching helps conserve moisture in summer and prevents weeds from growing. Sprinkle Boost soil improver around the base to encourage fruiting.

Sow tender crops

Despite the cold weather outside, you can give tender crops such as tomatoes an early start. Sow them in a heated propagator or on a warm sunny windowsill. Fill a small pot with seed compost and water well. Plant seeds about 1/8 inch deep and press on the soil a little to make sure the seeds have sufficient contact with the soil.

Top Tip

Cover loosely with plastic wrap to conserve moisture, and place your seeds in a dark, warm location, preferably between 70°F to 80°F.

Divide congested clumps of herbaceous perennials and grasses

Whilst herbaceous perennials and grasses are dormant, it’s still a good time to divide them. It means you’ll make vigorous new plants for free, and you can also transplant them into a better growing place.

Top Tip

Dig in some Boost soil improver to the hole or sprinkle on the surface once the plants have been firmed in.

Start planting summer bulbs

Summer bulbs, such as alliums, agapanthus, begonias and lilies should be planted in spring, when the soil is beginning to warm up. The ideal soil temperature is 13°C as in colder soil bulbs will not start to grow and may rot. Try to plant dry bulbs directly after purchasing them.

Top Tip

Summer bulbs perform best when planted in pots. Mix in some Boost soil improver into your compost or soil mix before planting.
