Hardy annuals, including cosmos, zinnia, nasturtiums and French marigolds can be sown straight in the ground they are going to flower. Make sure the space where you are about to sow is weed free. Rake the soil to a fine tilth and make some drills 20mm deep. Sprinkle the seed in carefully and cover them up with soil.
French marigolds and nasturtiums are great companion plants, so plant some seeds among your brassicas and use these artificial plants to lure any pests away from your crops.
Remove established and newly germinating weeds, then mulch generously with garden compost.
Dig in some Boost soil improver or sprinkle on the surface of the cleared borders.
The days are beginning to lengthen, and these longer days are a real trigger to new growth. Make the first outdoor sowings of hardy veg, such as spinach, covering with cloches or fleece.
Dig in some Boost soil improver or sprinkle on the surface of your raised beds, before putting on the fleece protection.
Early potatoes planted now will be ready for harvest in around ten weeks. It’s a good idea to chit these varieties before planting – that’s forcing them into growth before they are planted out. It allows them to produce long shoots from which the plants will grow.
Plant in trenches on the veg plot, or in large tubs if space is limited. Sprinkle compost accelerator onto the surface.
Scatter general-purpose fertiliser over flowerbeds and around roses, shrubs and hedges.
Make sure the soil isn't compacted so that Boost soil improver can be worked into the top few inches of the soil.
